The Current Flow

**Writer's Note: I'm taking the time to clean out my drafts folder. This post was originally written in the summer of 2022, but it was never published.

“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'” Now this He said about the Spirit, who those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

John 7:37-38 (ESV)

A few months ago, I was praying. These many months later I don’t remember what specifically I was praying about, but I wrote a phrase on a white board in my kitchen that I haven’t been able to escape.

RESET THE CURRENT

Loving to be near water, I immediately thought of a river. Give me a beautiful beach on a sunny day, and I am in a happy place. I love to just watch the water move. Be it crashing waves or a small ripple, it reels me in every time.

There is something about just watching the movement of water that can enrapture me. A particular way the water moves is called the current. The Oxford dictionary defines current (noun) as:

  1. (noun) the movement of water in the sea or a river; the movement of air in a particular direction.

Water has a current. And, I’m not sure why I didn’t think of it before but so does air (atmosphere). When I first heard the Lord say, “Reset the current,” I thought the Lord was only talking about water from a river in the context of John 7. But now that I am typing this out, maybe there is more to it with air as well, so…

Let’s dig in.

In John 7:37-38 above, it says, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” One of the first things I notice there is the word, “heart”. Some translations say, “out of his belly” or “From his innermost being”.

Matthew 12:34 says, “You brood of vipers, how can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.”

Whatever is in our heart or innermost beings – whatever we feed it – that is what will come out in our speech. Our voice will speak what we are filled with. Angry, frustrated, depressed, prideful? What we say will be filled with anger, frustration, depression and pride.

Look around America these days – be it on social media, radio, podcasts or the news – the sound that is coming forth is filled with anger, frustration, depression, pride and more. That sound from our mouths, through the airwaves and internet, has set the current for this country.

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

What is flowing out of you? Living water or _______?

Something to ponder.
