What’s Your Word?

Talking ’bout my resolutions!

Okay, okay. A very bad pun attempt on the song “My Generation”. But, that is how my brain works. I often think in song lyric form.

New Year’s resolutions are on my mind. In fact, every first of the month I harken back to January 1.

Every January 1, people around the world make resolutions. Some succeed. Many fail. Weight-loss programs, gyms, health-food stores see business boons at the first of each year.

It’s all about resolutions.

Whether you make New Year’s resolutions or not, it’s always good to have goals. But, they don’t just have to be for a new year. Resolutions, goals can be made at any time.

And so it was that mindset that sparked an idea in 2016. December 2016 to be exact.

What if we think differently about resolutions? What if we don’t focus on the act (i.e. lose weight, exercise more, etc.) and instead focus on one word? One life-giving, positive-enforcing word for the year?

What’s Your Word?

#WhatsYourWord was born on January 1, 2017 on my Instagram page. One word for a single year was my thought. One word to bring focus for the year.

Let’s face it. Losing weight, eating healthy, exercising more when those tasks are outside of our normal routine are hard to stick to. But, a mindset. Now, a mindset does require change in thinking, but it also brings an expectation.

Expect hope. Expect joy. Expect growth. Expect breakthrough. Expect restoration. Expect peace.

Expect ________?

For me, it wasn’t enough to share a word on January 1. Although I originally thought a word for the “year” was sufficient, I realized it wasn’t. What if people looked at the word like a resolution?

Come January 31, some might be disappointed if they didn’t achieve it. I wanted to help people not stifle them even more than they already are. That wasn’t my goal.

Resolutions shouldn’t just be for January 1. They can be started at any time. But, I needed a specific day for my brain to remember, so I chose the first day of each new month.

Opportunity

With whatever method works – a word for the year, a new word each month – the goal is the same. #WhatsYourWord is to inspire people. To help get people out of the ruts, restore their faith, encourage the positive and challenge them to think differently.

Just a few months ago, I discovered and finished a bible study that has a similar focus of #WhatsYourWord. I think it was created by a church – can’t remember which one – and they do it for a whole year.

Surely, this was no coincidence, right? I mean, I didn’t for a minute think that I “discovered” some breakthrough (that’s an upcoming #WhatsYourWord, btw) process that will change the world. Yeah….no!

There must be something to this word thing!

I must warn, however, that focus like this takes discipline, strength and faith. Discipline and strength to stay the course in your mindset. And faith to hold on to that word even when circumstances dictate otherwise.

You’ll have to FIGHT for that word.

A few might think it strange, but no success was ever achieved without first having a belief and the determination and fight to see it through to the end.

So, now that you’ve made it to the end…What’s YOUR Word? Let’s talk about our resolutions! Leave me a note in the comments and be sure to connect on Instagram
