Don’t Save It for Christmas

The below was written prior to Christmas Day 2020. I had every intention of publishing either before or on Christmas. Looking at it now, I think “after” Christmas is a perfect time for this reminder.

**

See you tomorrow.

In the book of Proverbs in the Bible, chapter 17, verse 21, it says:

Do not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring

Proverbs 27:1 – NASB

Over the past 10 years of my life, I’ve embraced this mindset more and more. Others who are older than me believe they don’t have many years left on this earth. While, in theory, that is true. In reality, as Proverbs alludes to, no one knows what is going to happen tomorrow.

Proverbs 27:1 came to mind tonight as I was listening to my Christmas music playlist on Spotify. Yes, I really was listening to Christmas music today.

But, there was an old song that came on that put a melancholy smile on my face. If ever there was a song for this holiday season, it’s this one.

Originally performed (and co-written) by Celine Dion, I love the arrangement and vocals of this song by Avalon. More so, though, I love the lyrics.

Don’t get so busy that you miss
Giving just a little kiss
To the ones you love
Don’t even wait a little while
To give them just a little smile
A little is enough

How many people are crying
People are dying…
How many people are asking for love

So don’t save it all for Christmas Day
Find a way
To give a little love everyday
Don’t save it all for Christmas Day
Find your way
Cause holidays have come and gone
But love lives on
If you give on
Love…

How could you wait another minute
A hug is warmer when you’re in it
And Baby that’s a fact
And saying “I love you’s” always better
Seasons, reasons, they don’t matter
So don’t hold back
How many people in this world
So needful in this world
How many people are praying for love

So don’t save it all for Christmas Day
Find a way
To give a little love everyday
Don’t save it all for Christmas Day
Find your way
Cause holidays have come and gone
But love lives on
If you give on
Love…

Let all the children know
Everywhere that they go
Their whole life long
Let them know love

Don’t save it all for Christmas Day
Find a way
To give a little love everyday
Don’t save it all for Christmas Day
Find your way
Cause holidays have come and gone
But love lives on
If you give on
Love…
Love…

“Unprecedented” is an overused, albeit apropos, word to describe the year 2020. Around the globe, we’ve seen a pandemic to cantankerous politics to natural disasters to cultural upheaval to economic chaos.

There is no such thing as the ‘normal’ we once knew. Our foundations of normalcy have been shaken around the world and each new month brings another challenge to navigate.

Approaching the 2020 holiday season is another new challenge for us all. For many, the holidays are a time to gather together with family, friends and loved ones. It’s about the holidays, yes – giving thanks, giving gifts – but there is also the connection they bring.

It’s a connection formed by love.

Loved ones have departed this earth. The simple act of a touch or a hug are now taboo. Holidays, birthdays, special moments are now marked by sorrow for so many. As others have stated before me, there is no timetable for grief.

January 2021: I’m still not sure why I didn’t publish the above before Christmas. But, maybe there’s good reason for that.

See, we celebrate Christmas at the end of our calendar year. It comes at a time where we are already in reflection mode. We have an opportunity to take stock of our victories and lament our losses. Depending on what we focus on, we can enter the holiday season with a heart of gratitude.

Did you get an opportunity to tell someone you loved them? Did you get the chance to bring a smile to someone’s face? Did someone do that for you?

If not, there’s always today, right here, right now. Don’t let circumstances or a broken heart stop you from telling someone you love them. Don’t let distance see you from reaching out to someone with a written (yes, written) letter or a phone call.

The year 2020 has left an unforgettable mark on so many lives. Do you want your 2020 dictating to you how to live your 2021? Or do you want to dictate to it? You can make your mark on 2021 by touching someone’s life with love.

Don’t save it all for Christmas Day.
