Over the past month or so, I have visited the Seattle-area four times. I say Seattle area because none of the visits were in Seattle-proper.
Three of those times I drove from one side of Washington state to the other. And each time, I found myself praying for the land.

SIGNS OF I-90
Dividing the north and south parts of Washington lies Interstate 90 (I-90). As you drive from one end to another, you are greeted by a diverse landscape. Mountains, desert-like areas, farmland, and cities. There are some rich, beautiful areas of Washington that make for wonderful farmland.
And you can see some of that farmland along I-90.
For those who appreciate it, driving across the state in the late Spring, early Summer is a perfect time of year to view some of the farmland. It used to be that as you drove, signs were displayed along the fence lines to tell you the name of the crop. Corn, wheat, alfalfa, potato signs were just some of the crops you could see along the drive on both side of the interstate.
Having driven across the state many times over the past 30+ years, I can remember when every farm had a sign along the way. Fewer signs dot the fences these days, but some still remain, a remnant of a more innocent time.

Driving along I-90 this past month, I found myself feeling an urge to pray for the farmers. I think it was spurred on by a For Sale sign. I hated to see that for sale sign. But I guess such is the reality of farming in 2026, at least in Washington.
What used to be a thriving industry is now resulting in sales and foreclosures.
But why was I feeling such an urgency to pray? I felt it growing and growing with each drive. Why now? Why in this season of growth on farmlands along the way did I need to pray?
On my drive home this past Saturday, I may have found the answer.

NO FAMINE
Everyone has their weak spots. No matter if you are a Christian or not, there are certain things in life that will challenge you. One of my pet peeves – slow drivers.
Needless to say, slow drivers were a ‘challenge’ for me on my drive home. Yes, the Lord was talking to me about this challenge. Did I listen? Not until I made it out of Snoqualmie Pass did I choose to listen to Him. The remainder of my drive, I did the speed limit.
For the better part of my 4+ hour drive, I listened to the Bible. It seemed good to me to recenter myself after ignoring the Lord’s directives about my driving. Yeah, I repented along the way.
Driving along toward the signs and farmland, I felt such a strong impression from the Lord to pray. I turned off the Bible and began to pray, sing, and decree over the farmland.
Praying in the spirit, I spoke rain and protection over the farmers and farmland. I asked God to send His ministering angels to all whether they knew Him as Savior or not. No fire, no flood, no weapons formed against them shall prosper.
And in the middle of my prayer I said, “No famine.”

AMOS 8
Our initial trip to Seattle in May, my husband and I were listening to a sermon from Dr Chuck Swindoll. When I first got saved, I remember listening to his teaching on the radio on the Book of Esther. His teaching was so simple, yet true to the Bible that I knew then that he was worth listening to.

As I was listening to his teaching on that drive, I heard him quote the Book of Amos. When he said, “famine in the land”, I quickly told my husband to send that quote to me since I was driving at the time.
After arriving home, I looked up the verse in Amos. It was Amos 8:11-12 (NKJV) –
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God,
“That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the Lord.
They shall wander from sea to sea,
And from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord,
But shall not find it.
Not really understanding what that had to do with the farmland on the drive, I just left it alone. After all, this was the Lord talking to Amos about His people, Israel, and a spiritual famine. Surely it had nothing to do with actual farmland in Washington.
By the time of the third drive, I was driving across the state by myself to attend the World Cup with my oldest son. No one else to talk to, no one else to drive, it was just me alone with my thoughts.
My prayers on the way home were, for lack of a better word, ferocious. I don’t know how else to explain it. They didn’t start out that way, but once I spoke out the word “famine”, every prayer changed.
I remembered Chuck Swindoll saying, “famine in the land”. I thought, surely not, Lord. There won’t be a famine in Washington. No famine could hit America.
“Famine in the land.”

FAMINE IN THE LAND
A famine in the land is coming. Amos referred to a spiritual famine – hearing the words of the Lord – which is already here in America. However, I believe there is coming an earthly famine to America.
Matthew 24:7-8 says, “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
Nation vs nation. Kingdom vs kingdom. Famines, pestilences, earthquakes. These are signs of the coming end. We’ve seen many of these come to pass already, but they are increasing.
For a famine to hit America like what I am seeing, it will be because the farmers will lose the ability to farm their land.
That is the only thing that I can see at this point. It doesn’t mean there isn’t more to it, but that is all the Lord has revealed to me right now. Which is why the Lord impressed upon me to pray for them.
And so, I share it with you now. Pray for the farmers to have wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to use all the resources that God has provided to them to farm their land properly. Pray for the land to provide an abundance of the harvests yet to come. And pray for the rain to water the seeds that are planted in the land.
We have the right and authority to do this. Take back the land physically and spiritually from the attacks of the enemy. He can attack where we least expect it.
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)
Pray for the farmers.
