What’s Feeding Your Roots?

Today I was part of a prayer call – only listening. I’ve been trying to join over the past month or so in an effort to exercise my “prayer muscles”.

Prayer is like a muscle. In order to stay in shape and not get into a sedentary lifestyle, that muscle must be used. My husband and I pray together every night, but there’s something about developing one’s own prayer time that is, in a word, empowering.

Anyway, I’ve been joining this weekly call in order to train my “muscle”. It’s about praying with other believers, listening to God and gaining an understanding of what the Holy Spirit is saying through others’ public prayer.

I’m not saying that what I hear or being to pray for is always right, but it’s part of building my relationship with God. In other words, faith.

Faith is key to any relationship, believe it or not. There has to be a belief (faith) in the other person that they are equally invested, right? When we being to doubt, that’s when troubles begin.

Same with God.

I have a faith and belief in God. He is who He says He is. As part of our relationship, I’m learning to trust Him more and that when He speaks, He will help me discern Him clearly.

This brings me to prayer time today. During the prayer time when the leader was praying, I began praying too. My phone was on mute, so no one else could hear me. But, as I was praying in the spirit, I began to type. I tried to keep my mind clear and heart open to just…type without thinking.

One of the things I typed was this:

Deep roots are being exposed. Do not feed what I am about to uproot. What comes from our mouth feeds others. What comes from My mouth feeds you.
Restoration comes from the depths.

Deep roots are being exposed. Restoration comes from the depths.

If you’ve read my blog recently, you may have come across a recent post, “What’s Your Word?“. Each year, God has graciously given me a word to focus on – this year’s is “Deep”.

Any time I am listening to a sermon or a prayer or reading the Bible, my ears are attuned to mentions of the word deep or depth. In this case

  • Deep roots are being exposed
  • Restoration comes from the depths

For me, personally, part of the “deep” this year is going deeper into His word. Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Deep roots.

For a Christ follower, God’s word should be our roots. It’s part of our foundation. It’s how we are able to stay strong and healthy despite all that the world throws at us. No matter the storm, deep roots in Christ will keep us standing.

But, what happens if our roots are not deep in God’s word? What if they have been grown by selfishness, pride, self-righteousness, hatred, bitterness, unforgiveness, hypocrisy or even just a critical heart? Racism, sexism, bigotry, prejudice, fear can also be the key to our life roots.

Let’s think about that for a minute.

What is at the core of who you are? What label do you use to describe yourself? What does your social timeline say about who you really are?

Maybe we don’t realize it because we think we portray ourselves as one thing to people when, in essence, we are really saying another. Luke 6:45b says, “For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” In today’s world, our mouth is represented by our fingers and what we type on social media.

  • Do not feed what I am about to uproot. What comes from our mouth feeds others. What comes from My mouth feeds you.

So, who are you? Who do you present yourself to be to the world? What are your roots saying? Deep roots are being exposed. This isn’t just a word for those who have their roots in the Bible. No person is perfect on this earth. There is always something.

Deep roots are being exposed right now. The deep roots of people. The deep roots of this country (America).

God wants to get rid of the things in us which go against Him and His word. In order to get rid of it, it must first be exposed. It’s hard to deal with an issue if you don’t know what it is in the first place.

Expose it and then replace it with something that is nourishing and promotes growth. It must be exactly what that thing needs in order to grow and restore it to proper health.

  • Restoration comes from the depths
  • In order for true restoration to take place, it must start at the roots. The roots of our heart and mind. The roots of a relationship. Restoration begins at the roots. It comes from the depths of our very being.

That’s what I believe God was trying to tell me today. And, for whoever reads this post too. 🙂

Deep roots are being exposed. Do not feed what I am about to uproot. What comes from our mouth feeds others. What comes from My mouth feeds you.
    Restoration comes from the depths.
